Do you have a mentor? If you don’t you need to change that pronto! There are so many brilliant, successful people out there who can help and teach you how to scale your business to the next level. On your search for a good mentor or whilst assessing your current mentor-mentee relationship, there are some vital things to look for in a mentor. I have compiled a list of seven things to look for in a mentor to help you. Check out my advice on why you need these seven things to look for in a mentor.
- Firstly, your desired mentor needs to be approachable. Having good networking connections and making successful strides will open doors for you, but choosing someone with a genuinely approachable nature is a reflection of the innate goodness of this person. This promises a good mentor-mentee relationship.
- Find a successful professional you admire who is knowledgeable, experienced, and has attained the dreams and goals you’re aspiring to achieve. This person will have a lot to offer to guide your personal and professional development.
- It is wise to choose a mentor who has encountered the same challenges you now face to share industry-specific tips and advice on how to overcome them. Age will not matter, but the level of experience and accomplishments matter. Thus, this individual will be good at relating to you and practically teaching you how to resiliently “walk in the shoes” of success.
- Every good relationship requires trust – the same applies to a mentor-mentee relationship. You will need somebody you can connect with and feel comfortable to open up to about your experiences, weaknesses, and more confidential business situations, such as handling contracts.
- A great mentor possesses good communication skills, listens well, and is empathetic. Therefore, he or she can identify your needs, not make you feel pressured or judged, make honest and relevant suggestions for you, and seek to help you to develop your problem-solving and decision-making skills instead of telling you what to do.
- This person must be willing and available to commit to both of you having meetings and working intentionally towards you accomplishing goals, growth, and objectives you have set for yourself.
- It is beneficial to partner with a supportive person with an influential network who is willing to connect you with, recommend you for good opportunities on your journey to success, and build your network.
That’s a wrap for a few of the many traits, abilities, and skills that you need to look for in a mentor. I hope that you will find these helpful.
